Module 10 - Medications and other Physical Treatments

Purpose

The module describes the more common medications used in the managment of mental illness and disorder, classifies them by clinical effect, and reviews some of the more important interactions and side effects.

Target audience

The module is intended to provide information to individuals working with people with an intellectual disability, wanting to increase their understanding of the knowledge and theory about working with people who are on medication for the treatment of mental disorders or challenging behaviour.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this module, you should be able to: Have an understanding of the major types of medication in clinical use. Understand the principles of why medication may be effective. Be able to describe and recognise some of the more common side effects of medication. Be aware of the more common and important medication interactions to look out for.
