What is an Intellectual Disability?

People often ask if a particular behaviour is due to a mental illness or an intellectual disability. Understanding what constitutes an intellectual disability is useful in order to identify what type of problems can be explained by the intellectual disability. It also helps to explain why people with an intellectual disability are likely to have poor mental health.
